One of the most common questions fleet managers ask is: Should I use a key lock or a combination lock? Based on our experience working with fleets, combination locks are often the clear winner.

With key locks, someone has to manage the keys, track who has them, and make sure they are returned after every ride. Lost keys can quickly become a headache. Combination locks eliminate that hassle entirely, making check-ins and checkouts much easier for both staff and guests.

Meet the Kryptonite Cable Lock
A great option for fleet use is the Kryptonite 1218 lock. Kryptonite has built a strong reputation for producing dependable security products, and the 1218 is a practical choice for protecting bicycles while riders are out and about.
The lock also offers flexible storage options. Many fleet operators simply place the lock in the bike’s basket for easy access. Others prefer wrapping it around the seat post. For those looking for a more permanent solution, the included mounting bracket provides another convenient option.
Already using a Kryptonite 1218 lock? Resetting the combination is quick and straightforward. Most locks arrive preset to either “00005” or all zeros. Once the lock is open, rotate the reset dial a quarter turn to enter programming mode, select your new passcode, and then return the dial to its original position. After locking it again, your new combination is ready to use.
